Catch the raucous calling of a peacock and the cackle of the jungle fowlall in Nagarhole
Indian ElephantNagarhole National park derives its name from the combination of two Kannada words. 'Nagar,' meaning snake, and 'hole,' meaning streams. True to its name, a few serpentine streams flow through the rich tropical forests of the park. This National Park is one of the oldest national parks in India. It was created in 1955 and was once maintained as an exclusive hunting preserve for the Mysore royal family. The park was declared as a national park in the year 1978 and is close to both the Bandipur Tiger reserve and the Mudumalai Wildlife sanctuary. This protected territory is the habitat of several endangered species.

Flora & Fauna
Nagarhole is a high rainfall region due to which the park consists of numerous open grassy swamps known as 'hadlus' in the local language. The area is mostly covered by dry as well as the moist and deciduous forests with floral species like teak and eucalyptus.

The animals that are commonly found in the park are - tiger, leopard, panther, sloth bear, gaur, elephant, sambhar, chital and other mammals like muntjac, the tiny mouse deer, giant squirrel, slender loris, langurs, wild boar, pangolin and macaques. The Park holds about 250 bird species like Malabar trogan, the Indian Pitta, green imperial pigeon the Malabar pied hornbill and the great black woodpecker.
