Jodhpur Vacations
The royal city of Jodhpur was founded in 1459 AD by
Rao Jodha, chief of the Rathore clan of Rajputs. It is surrounded by a 10 km
long wall made of stone with eight doors facing various directions and
leading to different places in Jodhpur. The city has numerous architectural
masterpieces in the form of monuments and buildings that stand testimony to
the splendid historical era. Once an important trade center, Jodhpur is now
the second largest city of Rajasthan.
Jodhpur is located on the edge of Thar Desert, with Jaisalmer in the west,
Nagaur in the east, Barmar, Jalor and Pali in south and Bikaner in north. It
experiences dry and hot weather. The city brings together a perfect blend of
religious and commercial culture besides being an important tourist
location.
Interesting Places
Mehrangarh Fort
The fort is situated at an altitude of about 125 metres and is spread over
an area of 5 sq. km with seven gates. The numerous palaces in the fort,
built in sandstone, are widely acclaimed for the beautiful intricate
carvings and sprawling courtyards. These palaces include: Moti Mahal, Phool
Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana with exquisitely carved
panels, porches and decorated walls & windows.
Umaid Bhawan Palace
Umaid Bhawan Palace showcases a series of ethereal and remarkable carvings
on the corridors, staircases and hallways. The portions of this beautiful
palace have been transformed into a hotel and thus is one of the largest
private residences in the world.
Jaswant Thada
Built in 1899, Jaswant Thada, a royal cenotaph was built in white marble in
commemoration of Maharaja Jaswant Singh. The building is beautifully carved
with marble jali (lattice) work depicting the creative genius of the
artisans.
