| Jaisamand Sanctuary is situated
50-km south of Udaipur, the picturesque 'City of Lakes', succulent
valleys and hills. It is on the bank of Jaisamand Lake, the second
largest artificial Lake in Asia. The sanctuary extends over an area of
52-sq-kms of thick forest land. Established in 1957, this sanctuary is
located besides the man-made lake by the same name. Covering a total
area of 160-sq-kms, it harbours sloth bear, leopard, chital, chinkara,
wild boar and a number of birds. Some crocodiles and fish can also be
spotted here. It was built by Maharaja Jai Singh, who on its inauguration on 2nd June 1691 AD, walked around it distributing gold equal to his own weight in charity. He built six 'Chhatris' (cenatophs) with finely embroidered elephants in front and the temple of Lord Shiva in the centre of the embankment. |
