Holy place for Sikhs nd Hindus
Situated near the Valley of flowers, the holy Hemkund is associated with the 10th Sikh guru, Guru Gobind Singh. It is holy shrine for shikhs. On the bank of the lake is a gurudwara, since it is believed that Guru Gobind Singh had meditated there. It is also a holy place for Hindus as well. Nearby to the lake is the Lakshman Temple where Lakshman-the brother of Lord Rama performed his penance.

The Frozen Lake
Hemkund Sahib, the Lake of Ice remains frozen for eight months in a year. Hemkund is the World`s highest shrine and is situated at an altitude of 4329 mts. The holy shrine is amidst seven snow-clad peaks and glaciers. The reflection of surrounding snow- clad peaks in its placid waters offers a scenic sight. The path to the lake is steep and stony, through which the pilgrims walk down and finally bathe in freezing water of the lake. People often carry the holy water of the lake in bottles.
