The majestic Hemkund lake is an important religious
destination for Sikh and Hindu pilgrims. Situated at an altitude of 4329 mts
above sea level, this place is surrounded by seven beautiful snow clad
mountain known as Hemkund parvat. Nature has bestowed this place with
abundant scenic beauty.
It is believed that the tenth guru of Sikh, Guru Gobind Singh had meditated
on the bank of Hemkund lake. As per the Hindu mythology, lord Lakshman, the
younger brother of lord Rama also meditated near the lake and regained his
health after being wounded in the battle by Megnath, the son of demon
Ravana. This lake is about 2 km in perimeter and water of lake is so clear
that it mirrors the image of Saptashringa peak which encompasses it.
Located in the Indian state of Uttaranchal, Hemkund area is also a very
popular trekking destination. Visitors can start trekking toward Hemkund
from Govindghat which is located at a distance of 15 km. This trekking
expedition will take you through pine forests where wild roses, ferns and
alpine flowers are found in large number. The last five kilometers of trek
which is a sharp climb from Ghangaria is truly mesmerizing. One can have a
breathtaking view of the advancing water of Lakshman Ganga while trekking up
to the Hemkund. Even though it has rich religious history, this place came
to prominence only in 1930 when it was discovered by a Sikh havaldar, Solan
Singh.
Prime Site
This place is basically popular for Gurudwara Hemkund Sahib and a Hindu
Temple. This Gurudwara was built in memory of Guru Gobind Singh who is
believed to have meditated near this lake. The gurudwara is a star shaped
structure made of stone and concrete masonry. The small Hindu temple is
dedicated to Lord Lakshman, the younger brother of lord Rama ,who too is
believed to have meditated near Hemkund lake.
Fairs and Festivals
Every year during month of February-March, winter sports are held in the
peaks of Hemkund. The thrill and excitement of this event draw large number
of adventure sports lover from all over the world. Other than this,
important Hindu and Sikh festivals are celebrated very devoutly by the
thousands of devotees who throng the temple and gurudwara during important
festivals.
Around Hemkund
Hemkund, which itself is a nature's paradise, is surrounded by some
incredible beautiful places. Auli, Badrinath, Joshimath, Govindghat etc are
some of stunning neighbors of Hemkund. The imperial hill of Auli is a very
popular winter sports destination while Badrinath and Joshimath are
important Hindu pilgrimage destinations. Gobindghat which is at a distance
of 12 km is famous for the valley of flowers
General Information
Just like other hill area of Garhwal region, Hemkund too experiences harsh
winter, with temperature dropping to single digit. While summer is
relatively pleasant, visitors still need to carry warm clothes. Best time to
visit this place is from July to October.
How To Reach
By Air: The nearest air link is from Jolly Grant airport located at
Dehradun. It is at a distance of 334 km.
By Train: Rishikesh is the nearest rail head which is 293 km away.
By Road: Hemkund Saheb, is 5km away from Ghangaria , which is approachable
by foot from Govindghat. This town has got good road connectivity with other
nearby town like Rishikesh, Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and remaining town
of Garhwal region.
