The story of Indian art and
sculpture goes back to 2nd and 3rd century BC from the time of Indus
Civilization. Various items found from the excavation, show the kind of
excellence Indian artists had achieved in those time. There are
innumerable number of sculptures found in all over the India. Sculptures
found in areas like Khajuraho, Ajanta, Ellora and in numerous caves of
South India have fascinated many visitors. These arts are best example
of the India's artistic brilliance of earlier era. Temples of Khajuraho
is one of the best example of how advance were Indian artists. There is
lot of eroticism in the architect of various sculptures painted at
Khajuraho temples.
These temples were built during the time of King Chandela. Altogether
there are around 20 temples. These temples have been declared world
heritage site by world conservation body UNESCO. Caves of Ajanta and
Ellora are another masterpiece of Indian art. Sculptures of these cave
tell the story of how Buddhism grew in India. There are total 63 caves
in these two town. In Ellora caves one find assimilation between three
religions namely Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism in the form of
sculptures drawn on the wall. The caves of Ellora and Ajanta each year
attracts large number of tourists from all over the world.
Buddhist sculptures found in places like Sarnath and Sanchi also speak
highly of the India's architectural brilliance. The great Stupa found in
Sanchi is one of the rare surviving relic of Mauryan emperor and is a
famous Buddhist monument.
